Want a Great Way to Confuse a Photographer? Invite Them To be Your Wedding Guest.

I was invited to my good friends Ara and Nate’s wedding this past weekend…as a guest!  These two are perfect for each other and their wedding really reflected who they are, what’s important to them and how they live their lives.  The ceremony was held on a private beach in Cape Perpetua on the Oregon Coast.  It was a weekend of wedding fun to be had by all in attendance.

Here are a few words to describe my feelings as a wedding guest; excited, honored, happy, and a little awkward and confused.  Let me explain the awkward and confused part.  You see, I’ve been invited to many weddings as a photographer.  I know what my role is on the big day as The Picture Taker.  As a guest, I found myself wondering about everything from what to do with my hands to where to stand.

Here’s a little side-by-side comparison for ya.

Tamara Young Destination Wedding Photographer as Guest

I’ve seen way to many guests who seem to forget that they are in fact guests at a wedding and not photographers.  The Bride and Groom have selected a Professional Photographer to document their wedding day.  That includes getting pictures of their guests enjoying the ceremony.  Personally, I prefer to photograph guests with their hankies up to their faces wiping away tears of joy, not with their professional camera gear covering their faces or looking down to adjust settings.  Those don’t usually make it into the album or slideshow, either.

As a photographer, I never travel without my gear.  But when I’m invited as a guest, I am a guest.  Though I may take a few shots here and there, they’re mainly snap shots and maybe one or two of the couple for my personal enjoyment.  I may even tweet or facebook a few; after the ceremony of course.  If I’ve taken anything that I think could be perceived as a Pro shot, it’s not posted anywhere online until after the hired photographer has posted theirs or delivered photos to the couple.  It’s just not cool to steal another photographer’s thunder.  Although I really don’t think it’s possible for anyone to steal Bambi Cantrell’s thunder.  Watching her work and assisting in the smallest way was an incredible opportunity to learn even more about my craft.  Plus, it was just fun to watch her get excited as she interacted with Ara & Nate to pose them for their portraits.  That’s why I’ll only show you a few shots that I took with my iPhone.

Ara and Nate’s wedding weekend was a blast and I wish them all the love and joy that they can stand!

PS:  If I were you, I’d check back next week to see the photos and video of the fire dancer, and maybe a few of the belly dancer.  These ladies were captivating!  Who knows, I may throw in a few other funnies.

Take One For The Team

I went to lunch at Friday’s today with my Sista/Friend Debra.  We strolled along the sidewalk, chit-chatting away as we usually do until something dreadful happened.   The heel of my shoe went in between the tiles on the sidewalk and ripped the lush suede fabric.

As it happened,  Debra stopped cold and shrieked…

“Oh Honey! Is your shoe OK?!”

She then asked about my ankle.  It was a true “Sex In The City Moment” that we giggled about over our salads.  We told our friend/server Rich about it and he joined right in with “Well at least your priorities are in line.  You can always fix that ankle.”

In case you’re wondering, my ankle is just fine.

Sometimes, you just have to take one for the team.  Today, my 6″ Stilettos took one for the team and saved me.

Happy Birthday Marti! Has It Really Been 21 Years?!

Today is a very special day.  My little Ladybug, my Pooh Bear, my heart, is 21 years old.  I can’t explain how I’m feeling inside.  All I know is that the unexpected tears keep visiting to disrupt my mascara.  This isn’t just one or two tears or a little pool of water welling up in my left eye that I can prevent from falling by tilting my head back.  No, this is a hot steady stream of tears that leaves my face a shade of burgundy that I can’t joke and laugh away.

I’m filled with a mixture of  joy, pride, excitement, fear, admiration, anxiety, sadness and gratitude.  But that’s just the start.  You don’t even want to know all questions that stir within me, like:

  • Did I do a good job as a single parent?
  • Did I teach her well?
  • Did I surround her with people that gave her good guidance?
  • Did I make the right choices for the both of us?
  • Did I encourage and challenge her enough?
  • Did I discipline her enough, but not too much?
  • Does she know the difference between a pea and a bean?
  • Does she know that it’s OK to make mistakes as long as she learns from them and is not a repeat offender?
  • When I’m not around, is she still respectful of her elders?
  • Does she know that my shoulder is always hers when she needs to cry, my ear is hers when she needs to talk, and my arms are always open when she needs a hug?
  • Does she know the magic that lies between a jar of Vaseline and a knot of raw Shea butter?
  • Does she know that she’s the best part of me?

I wish she’d known my mother.  The family and I have always told her how proud her grandmother Joann was of her little grandbaby.  I wish she could remember being held by her, snuggled, kissed, pampered and paraded.  My mother would not allow anyone to touch her without first washing their hands.  I know, I know…

A few weeks ago, I spoke about the Village that it takes to raise a child in my Mother’s Day blog post.  To all of those members of Marti’s Village, “Thank You.”

So here we are, 21 years in the making, and we have ourselves a very creative fashion designer and college student who’s also a patient, loving and compassionate Nanny with a great sense of humor that’s laced with sarcasm.  It’s all balanced by responsibility, humility, intelligence and common sense that were all built on a strong Southern foundation of morals, values and self-respect.

To my Marti,

I love you and I am so proud of the young lady you’ve become.  You are the best part of me.

Infinity,

Mommy

Please join me in wishing Marti a Happy Birthday!

Here’s a few images of the Birthday Lady.

Marti is still seen walking around with a phone in her hands. I promise she wasn't born holding one.

(Does anyone else have such a hard time choosing just a few images of your kid?)

A quick update:  Since Marti was about a year old, she would pat me on my back when I hugged her.  This morning, when she patted me on my back, it turned on some serious waterworks that resulted in tears falling into my coffee (literally)  and a wonderful feeling that I can’t quite describe. :)

Life on a Freeway

This is for Debra, who drove during my little “Photog Drive-by Shooting” in L.A. a few weeks ago.  I’ll share more images of our afternoon of  Fabric Shopping with our girls, Marti & Sarah a little later.  You can check out Debra’s cool photo’s here in the mean time.  (No laughing at the dancing Tamara pics.)

I don’t always name my photos, but this one said “I deserve a name, Lady.  I may not be here much longer, so allow me the respect of at least having a name.  Then shut up and let people tell their own story about me.”

So…

“Hello, I’m Tamara Young, a Photographer on an Aimless Journey

Please allow me to introduce you to:

“Life On A Freeway”

Los Angeles California L.A. Graffiti Art near the L.A. Garment District on the 10 Freeway by Tamara Young of T Style Photography

Enjoy your story.

I’m shutting up now.

Shot on a Canon G12 in RAW from a moving car window on the 10 Freeway and edited on my iPad.  (In case you’re into that kinda thing.)

I love watching the Magic Moment happen to others. Glad you were there with me when I had mine.

The real question is….Metal or Glossy?
